2nd-4th November 2016

Orkestra actively contributed from different research areas at the Regional Innovation Policies Conference organised by Professor Kevin Morgan from 2nd to 4th of November in Cardiff. Academics from different European universities and research centres debated and discussed the last developments in the fields of regional innovation, regional development and innovation policy.
Miren Larrea and James Karlsen spoke about their experience in policy cogeneration based on Zubigintza-Gipuzkoa Sarean. Their presentation was part of the debate held by different actors –including both researchers- who participated in the editing of the book to honour Bjorn Asheim, one of the instigators of the regional innovation system’s concept, at his 70th birthday.
Edurne Magro presented the challenges faced by the regional scene when evaluating Smart Specialisation Strategies, as compared to evaluating regional innovation policies, especially with regards to the governance of the evaluation process. This is the result of on-going work together with James Wilson.
In addition, she presented together with Jon Mikel Zabala from Deusto Business School the conclusions from comparing two different cases (Skania in Sweden and the Basque Country) in terms of policy coordination mechanisms, work that is being carried out together with Mikel Navarro.
There were also other contributions presented by researchers from UK universities, showing part of the collaborative research that Orkestra is currently conducting. Elvira Uyarra, from the University of Manchester, presented the conceptual contributions of public procurement for innovation at the regional and local scales. And Professor Kevin Morgan talked about the implementation process of Smart Specialisation Strategies in the Basque Country and their implications in terms of leadership, work that has been conducted together with Mari Jose Aranguren and James Wilson.
