Mari Jose Aranguren is a Professor in Economics at Deusto University. She is a recognised expert in the area of competitiveness and territorial strategy, clusters and networks, and policy analysis and evaluation, having published several books and articles in specialised national and international journals of impact.

She has vast experience in leading national and international projects in the aforementioned research areas and has worked closely with different agents in the Basque Country. She is also an expert advisor and evaluator of European research projects and several national and international scientific journals.

At the beginning of 2025 Mari Jose received the ASPEGI 2025 award, as the best female director in Gipuzkoa, from the Association of Professional Women, Businesswomen and Directors of Gipuzkoa. In the international arena, in 2016 Mari Jose received recognition from the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness of Harvard University for her personal career and her contribution to territorial competitiveness.

From 2014 to 2016 Mari Jose was a member of the Advisory Group for the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 programme, in the Societal Challenge 6 ‘Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective Societies’ as well as in the challenge of ‘Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation’.
