His naming took place during the 18th Annual Conference on Clusters and Competitiveness organised by TCI Network, a network of professionals in competitiveness, clusters and innovation, from the 3-6 November in Daegu, South Korea. This year’s conference brought together more than 900 experts from 87 different countries.

The theme of this year’s conference was creative clusters in a global economy: new agendas for companies and policy makers. James Wilson, researcher at Orkestra, and Ibon Gil de San Vicente, Deputy General Director of Orkestra represented the Institute, member of the network of professionals since 2006.

Ibon Gil de San Vicente made a presentation on Orkestra’s internationalisation strategy and the challenges faced in maintaining a productive balance between engagement with stakeholders in the Basque Country and knowledge generation through participation in projects in other parts of the world. James Wilson organised a cluster lab on cluster evaluation together with Madeline Smith, professor at Glasgow School of Art, and Emily Wise, professor at the University of Lund. The lab attracted over 40 participants who worked together to identify and share experiences and solutions with regards to this theme. James also took part in a plenary session panel where he talked about the key roles that universities can and should play in fostering stronger clusters and regional competitiveness.

The annual general meeting of TCI network was held during the conference, at which James Wilson was elected onto the Board of Directors for a three year term. During this period James will help govern, administer and represent TCI network to take forward its mission and objectives.

As James observes “the election to the Board is an important development for Orkestra and will enable the Institute to deepen links with this critical network and contribute even more actively in the global arena to building bridges between academic analysis of competitiveness and the practical issues faced by policy-makers, clusters and firms”.

Orkestra as part of the network hosted the 15th edition of the conference that was held in the Basque Country in 2012.
