Parlamento vasco energia eloy

Eloy Álvarez Pelegry, director of the Energy Department, presented today his work on the energy production model and its impact on competitiveness in the Basque Country, to the Basque Parliament.

Álvarez Pelegry advocates to “analyse the efficiency of certain energies for the industry and final consumer”, and added that “the diversity of energy sources is an asset and, therefore, must be incorporated”. From a competitiveness point of view, he also added that one of the biggest challenges for guaranteeing the energy supply “is the growth of diverse and new segments, with the aim of providing sufficient margin to change and migrate towards new operating schemes”.

During his presentation the Energy Department director focused on the production and distribution of electric power, putting in context the guidelines of the European Union that, among other aspects, seeks a unique energy regulation that is energy-efficient, guarantees supply, while having an impact on research, innovation and competitiveness.

He also spoke about the measures to be adopted, in line with that discussed during the climate change summit in Paris, with regards to decarbonisation. Thus he emphasised that decarbonisation is not only something to keep in mind from an energy point of view, but also from an economic point of view.

With regards to energy distribution, he pointed out that “the change factors, without a doubt will be smart metering and distributed generation”. Álvarez Pelegry highlighted that “the future is complicated as there will be a decentralised generation where the consumer adopts a more relevant role and will form part of the market, not only as the final consumer, but also as a generator of energy”. In this way, he added that it is important to integrate new technologies so as to meet the demand of this new market.
