Eloy Álvarez Pelegry, director of the Energy Department, states that “climate change is an aspect to be dealt with at micro- and meso-levels with early solutions, which address the reality of each territory”, during the closure of the seminar on climate change, held in Madrid. He also highlighted the role of the Paris Summit (#COP21) as a catalyst of objectives to alleviate the global emission of greenhouse gases.
More than 200 professionals from firms and institutions gathered today at the seminar on Climate Change: Implications for Technological Developments and Industrial Competitiveness organised by the Energy Department of Orkestra, The Foundation for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (FUNSEAM) and Fundación Repsol.
The aim of the event, celebrated in the Auditorium of Fundación Repsol in Madrid, was to explain the main implications for technological development and industrial competitiveness in the fight against climate change, before the Paris Summit to be held at the end of November.
Eloy Álvarez Pelegry, director of the Energy Department of Orkestra, inaugurated the event together with Antonio Bufrau, President of Repsol; Antonio Llardén, President of Enagás y FUNSEAM; and Eduardo González, Deputy General Director for Coordination of Climate Change of the Spanish Office of Climate Change.
Furthermore during the closure of the seminar, Eloy summed up the main aspects dealt with during the day with regards to reducing CO2 emissions. With the Paris Summit about to take place Eloy noted that it is hoped that this event acts as a catalyst for the adoption of new plans addressed at reducing greenhouse gases. He also highlighted the need to set goals to reduce the emissions considerably by 2050. One of the constant challenges to achieve this reduction is the economy and the financing of tool with this objective.
In this regard, he placed emphasis on the need to support technologies that affect energy efficiency, renewables, carbon capture and storage, improvements in the industry and transport, as well as on technologies oriented at the creation of networks and smart cities. He also highlighted the need to colaborate between public and private institutions gobally. Furthermore, Eloy underlined that climate change is a micro and mesa issue, since geopolitical scenarios are diverse and so it is important to handle this topic with quick solutions that deal with each situation in every territory.
The seminar included the participation of the main agents and directors of the largest energy firms in Spain, such as: Enagás, Iberdrola, Repsol, UNIDO, the International Energy Agency, the Spanish Office of Climate Change, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relationships, and the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, as well as the organising entities.
