Orkestra-Basque Institute of Competitiveness celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and drew up a manifesto listing the main challenges facing the Basque Country. Each of these challenges needs to be analysed in depth in order to progress with them in coming years. One of these challenges is that of welfare and social cohesion. The Basque Country’s progress, its development in the international context and its role in a globalised economy should take into account the welfare of all and social cohesion. Economic growth should not be an end in itself, but a necessary aspect in order to advance in social transformation via concepts of co-responsibility, solidarity and commitment.
This is the first challenge that we are going to analyse over three sessions from March to May 2017 in collaboration with DeustoForum which are detailed below:

Vision of different agents of the relationship between competitiveness and social welfare

The second session included the participation of one firm, the government, a social organisation and an agent of knowledge. Each of them, in a round table, shared their vision on how to strengthen the relationship between competitiveness and well-being.

SESSION 1 • March 2
The first session will address the relationship between competitiveness and social welfare, in which Matthias Firgo, a European expert who has explored the relationship between these two concepts and belongs to the WIFO (Austrian Institute of Economic Research) will explain how competitiveness influences social welfare and how social welfare impacts upon competitiveness.
