Degree With a PhD in Economics and Business Administration from the ESTE (University of Deusto campus at San Sebastian), María José Aranguren is the professor responsible for the Department of Economy of this institution and the Director of the Chair for Clusters, Innovation and Regional Development in Orkestra, Institute for Competitiveness + Development.
Biography Her research work is centred on the area of Clusters and networks, on the Analysis of policies, more specifically on those directed at the SMEs, and on Business Demography. She has published an extensive number of national and international articles, of which the following are of particular note: Determinants of economic units creation in the period 1985-93. The case of the Manufacturing Industry in CAPV (Small Business Economics, V. 12, nº 3, 1999), The policy process: clusters versus spatial networks in the Basque Country (in Clusters and Globalisation: the development of economies, edited by Pitelis, C.Sudgen, R. and Wilson, J. Edward Elgar, 2006), The cluster/network industrial policy actually improves business competitiveness. The results of the assessment of two experiences in the Basque Country Autonomous Community (Ekonomiaz, Nº 60, 2006) and, soon to be published, Networks, Governance and Economic Development: Bridging Disciplinary Frontiers” (Edward Elgar Publishing Limited). She has organised international workshops in the area of clusters and has taken part in various congresses as a member of the scientific committee. She has presented many different papers at a number of congresses.
